What are these things, how do they work??!!

Sometimes I feel like my personal style is a little bit “cool Miami grandma”. Like, she’s a resident of Miami, definitely a grandma, but she’s got a kicky attitude and buys you stuff you actually want!  If you were 21 (or 18, what the heck, she’s cool, right?) you guys would go somewhere swanky to sip gin and tonics or frosty glasses of a crisp white (she sprung for the bottle, better price per glass) after a shopping trip (somewhere that sells breezy caftans and cocktail rings, she knows the owner).  This gold purse speaks to that type of lady, possibly because up until recently it belonged to my grandma.

All blue errythang. Plus yellow stud earrings, some real grandma jewelry, and some wannabe grandma jewelry. I’m okay with both.

This outfit is showcasing the “three good colors in a get-up” thing I do. Like, pick three good colors, then have them all in your outfit. An extremely complicated concept that I understand if you aren’t able to grasp. Ok, here, I’ll explain it - there’s orange (purse), blue (necklace) and, ahh, magenta (dress). I really like colors.

I think I’ve gushed enough about this necklace, but seriously - it makes anything cool!

If you couldn’t already tell, I’m a firm believer that you can never have on too much turquoise. It becomes sort of a neutral - but then again, I was thinking the other day that it’s possible I think every color is a neutral………….disregard everything I’ve ever told you.

Wa-Wa-Wedding //

There are tons of married people in the world. Getting married is a fairly regular occurrence in the grand scheme of life, but I’m sort of new to the game of attending weddings - I think the last time I went to one, I was a flower girl. NOT THAT I’VE AGED A DAY OR ANYTHING! Getting dressed for a wedding can invoke panic and anxiety, a lot of second guessing, or the sense that you must “look perfect” (all those people!! all those appetizers!! What is the alcohol sitch?). So when it’s your sister tyin’ the knot, you want to look extra speshul. However, after several weeks of buying and returning potential dresses that never lived up to what I imagined they’d be, I said “Oh, what the heck”, and decided instead to put together one of my work tops, a spangly pencil skirt, and half of my personal jewelry collection. The shoes are new, though. At least buy yourself a fresh pair of kicks.

These are some very Lady (scuffed) work ankle boots, and my very Lady black doctor bag, too. Both items show I am serious and business-like (about what we are eating for lunch).

I love this layered necklace trend because it makes piling on the jewels socially acceptable, and obviously I am down with that.

Da Monday Bluez

This week I’m gonna do some work outfits - excited yet? Judging from the reaction my neon hair tips received in the fall, it doesn’t surprise me that I get uncomfortable at the thought of going Full Hipster at the office. These people, they just don’t get my art, man (working title of my in-progress novel). I have to find sneaky ways to work in the things all the kidz are wearin. The added volume on both the skirt and the shirt make it more unflattering and therefore more cool. Add in two necklaces and some polka dots, but still appear to be a (semi) normal person at work, due to the overall ‘professional’ format - appropriately long skirt, conservative heels, fancy lady purse, all that jazz. This way you won’t look like a TOTAL CORPORATE SQUARE at all of the cool after-work activities you do, like thinking about exercising, or cooking turkey meatballs - that’s what I’m doing, anyway. Wanna hang out??

This is one of those weird things I do with my hair in the bathroom during my daily beautification ritual. Occasionally I decide I don’t need to do anything further to whatever bobby-pin creation I’ve made in order to leave the house. “Is this bed-head or do I just look unkempt?” is a question I sometimes ask my co-worker.

I did a lilac-y eye to add a little spring factor to this get-up. I get so comfortable in my black cat eyeliner and red lip makeup routine, I have to push myself to use color these days. Sometimes it is nice, no?

Small Victories

March is a month of small victories. A cold but sunny Saturday, leaving work when it’s still light outside, ordering your coffee iced and not receiving weird looks - these are the small victories of the end of a city winter. You know things are going to be totally sweet real soon, but it feels almost inappropriate to fully celebrate the season switch just yet, akin to when college bros wear flip-flops in the snow. I’m not mentally ready to cavort around in full spring regalia just yet, but I’ll take my small victories along with the rest of them by punching up my standard black and whites with hot pink sunglasses and a turquoise-studded clutch. Baby steps, people, baby steps.

I used Benefit Are They Real? mascara, and as someone who loves her mascara, this one’s not messin’ around. I’m partial to a slightly caked-on, spider-y lash look, though. Maybe you’re not into that. The eyeshadow is one of the few beauty items I’ve ever had to re-buy - Urban Decay in Sin. It’s perfect, because I <3 sinning!

This week, I’d like you to work on your ‘half-tucked-tee’ game. Thank you for reading.

I used MAC Pigment eyeshadow in Blue/Brown with a small angled liner brush to create a softer version of the black cat-eye style liner I normally favor.

And my hair is straight!! This week’s identity crisis continues…

Hot for Spring: A Sartorial Identity Crisis

I gave a friend of mine a special sneek peek of these pics (she was thrilled, I’m sure), and her response was, “what kind of pants are those??”. I answered with the brand, but then realized that she was probably expressing her mock horror at the fact that I’m in jeans - and they’re plain old blue.  For a while I was sort of opposed to jeans of the blue variety, but something about the looser cuts and ‘boyfriend’ styles popping up for spring just feels real fresh. Also weird - pointy heels. Who am I??

Snow Much Fun

I took Anthony and Dustin up to my Vermont ski chalet this past weekend for a little break from our respective cities! The skiing was super duper due to some actual snow falling out of the sky at a fairly steady pace. I skiied, Anthony snowboarded, Dustin drank a few Bloody Marys with my dad, we hot-tubbed, played in the snow, over-ate, but still found the time to snap pictures of each other’s beautiful faces, of course. I’ve never actually worn this outfit aside from these photos, but I think something like this would be appropriate for work, or for a daytime jaunt, or a walk of shame. Whatever you feel! Do you, girlfriend! I would recommend a coat, however - I think the contents of my furse (see what I did there??) were warmer than I was during this shoot.&nbsp
